Since 2009, Karen has been the Executive Director of SHARE in Africa.  She has spent 7 summers in Tanzania, working on the ground with the students and staff in SHARE supported schools.

A retired Adjunct Professor of Children's Literature, Karen taught Graduate courses at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.  Her research in literature for children has been widely published, with her chapter, “’It was a life-changing book” (Hungry Words, 2006) positively reviewed in The Irish Times.  Graduating with Distinction from Drew University, her Doctoral Dissertation, “Telling Bridget’s Tale of Hunger: Children’s Literature of the Great Irish Famine,” won the University Prize. Karen has presented 17 papers on children’s and young adult literature at national and international conferences.

With her husband Sean, and their three children, Shannon, Megan, and Brendan, Karen has also volunteered in Peru, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.   Karen resides in St. Petersburg, Florida.
